This business only runs from May-July but it has a very beautiful selection of plants, both producing and flowering.

Where: take Highway 16 West, heading to Vanderhoof
Jardine Road - approx. 56 km from PG, 35 km before Vanderhoof
there is a rest stop beside the highway and the greenhouse is just behind it on the left side.

As much as possible!!

I have been finding a few articles in the local papers, etc, from sarcastic writers that put down this whole concept of eating locally, surviving on 100 miles worth of food, and giving up EVERYTHING!

I believe in the coming shortage of resources, fuels will only last so long, why not look a little closer to home and save a little transportation - I think my foods are more travelled than I am!

I sincerely hope that everyone can use my site as a helpful resource to finding out about their own town, some of the businesses that are hidden in the trees and houses, and feel a little better about doing SOMETHING towards "doing their part".

Please don't give up everything, but find a little something more special in our lands around us.

Good Food Box

The Good Food Box is a monthly, bulk-produce buying program open to anyone interested in good nutrition and saving money. No membership is required. By pooling your money with others, you can increase your buying power and you can expect to save 30-40% on your fresh fruit and vegetable purchases. The program aims to help build a healthier community and local food system by encouraging consumption and appreciation of locally grown farm produce.

When local supplies are exhausted, we purchase through local wholesalers. The intentions of the Good Food Box program are to encourage healthy eating, to increase local food production and to promote and educate consumers about our food system. Through education and action, we can strive for a healthier community.

What's in the Box?
The contents of the box vary from season to season, depending on the local availability, pricing, and quality. You can expect at least 15 different types of produce in every box including potatoes, onions, carrots, salad greens and apples. The newsletter promotes local farmers, food events, and recipes.

How do I order the Box?
Locate the most convenient depot for your food box pick-up and then drop your $15.00 cash payment (exact change please) at the corresponding registration centre by the first Friday of the month.

You will receive a receipt that details the time and place to pick up your food box. Pick-up day is the third Wednesday of every month. Don't forget to pick up your box, as leftover boxes are donated to various programs the following morning.

UNBC:
The Good Food Box on campus is run by the Prince George Public Interest Research Group (PGPIRG). The program is only offered during the academic year.  They also sell local eggs - pre-order to reserve your dozen.

They also have a University Farmers' Market on campus! The market is usually on a Tuesday mid-day, near the bus loop, both indoor and out.

Egg Dying the Natural Way!

I know this is a bit late for Easter, but it'll be here for next year or any other reason!!

Here is a way to make Edible Dyed (hardboiled) eggs:

Yellow: Boil 3 cups water, 2 tablespoons turmeric, and 1 tablespoon vinegar together, uncovered, for 15 min. Cool before adding your hardboiled eggs. Leave the eggs in the dye for at least 10 min to get a stronger (but still pastel) pigmentation.

Blue: Add 12-15 frozen blueberries to 3 cups of boiling water, simmer for 10 min. Crush the blueberries to make a slurry, add a tablespoon of vinegar and boil for another 5 min. Cool. Add eggs for 10 min.

Green: Chop 4 large red cabbage leaves, add to 3 cups of boiling water and 1 tablespoon of vinegar, simmer for 15 min. Strain and cool. Add eggs for 10 min.

Pink: Strain the liquid from pickled beets into a jar, add eggs.
